A Great Game Of Ups And Downs

Ah, I remember the cool and addictive flash game where you had to control a helicopter and fly it around the screen and avoiding obstacles. You had to continually click your mouse to make it fly. The reason it was so addictive was because I couldn’t really control it for more than 20 or so seconds, so it was a race against myself to beat a record.

While I’ve seen this type of game in the App Store before (I’ve even reviewed one here), I must say that DoodlePlane has a few more tricks up its sleeve.

Apart from being able to choose between a bunch of different planes you can fly, you also have 10 worlds to fly it through. Once you start the game, hitting play will get you to the first world: New York City.

So you have your plane. And you have your world. Now what? There are basically just two controls for you to master. With one button you control the plane’s [...]

The Future Of Connect-Three Gaming

Remember what I’ve been telling you about innovating age-old concepts? Well, I’m going to say it again. There’s no value in a game that doesn’t innovate, that doesn’t, in a way, create emotion. I don’t know about you, but for me emotion stems from innovation. I always like to see and play a game on my iPhone that brings something new to the table. The bigger the table, the higher the motivation for developers to innovate and stand out. And guess what, the App Store table is pretty darn big. Few developers seem to make it, but the ones that do are truly noteworthy.

Today I’m going to honor such a developer with a truly creative game. So without further a due, please take a bow to The Blackhole – a connect-three type of game that changed my perspective on connect-three games.

Yes, at its core, The Blackhole is just a connect-three type [...]

You’ve probably seen this type of game before. And even played it. Yes, you may be addicted to it. Whatever it’s called, your addiction needs a new name. And that name is AstroJam – a cute iPhone game featuring cute graphics and cute sounds. Did I just say cute thrice?

The idea of the game is simple. You control a flying saucer with your typical green alien in it. You fly around the galaxy minding your own business, but you’re not alone. There are asteroids everywhere and it’s up to you to keep your green buddy safe.

They way you do this is by moving the flying saucer around the screen, avoiding the asteroids. You basically use your finger to drag and slide the ship around the iPhone’s screen.

The longer you survive, the faster the asteroids move. Don’t worry though, there are power-ups to help you along the way. Collect the shield to keep you safe [...]

How To Create A Great Puzzle Game

pengi-iphone-game-review

Wow! Just wow! It’s been a while since a played game that made me say this. The App Store is surely filled with a bunch of poor apps and games, but once in a while, there’s that once concept that I tend to over-appreciate, but for good reason. Pengi is that one concept that made me stare at my iPhone wherever and whenever I had the chance and the time.

What’s so neat about it then? Well, the puzzles are short and to the point. You can play it for hours on end, you can play a quick game when you’re waiting in line at the supermarket, or you can solve a puzzle while commuting. The game is slick and it moves fast. There are no hiccups (that I’ve uncovered yet) and it has a slow learning curve.

It’s still a puzzle game, so it will take the best out of you to complete, but it certainly won’t leave you pulling [...]

Life is a series of choices that we all must make. There’s no looking back, but only looking forward towards what the future holds and what the next choice we’d have to make is. Some choose to not choose at all and believe what others have chosen for them. That’s a choice in itself already. But this is not an article about life’s meaning or some philosophical discussion about the future and making the right choice. This a review for an app that appeals to a small set of believers in anything that foretells their future for them.

When you can’t do reading in tea leaves, coffee, in your palm or when you don’t have a magic 8 ball in your pocket, fire up your toaster and make some toast. Apparently, the morning toast contains vital information for how your day is going to go. Can’t read the message in the toast? Let Toaster Oracle do it [...]

ap-economics-iphone-app-review

Ap Economics is targeted specifically at students prepping for their Economics exam. It features sections on both Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, trying to capture all the relevant information these two classes have covered.

AP Economics features a very organized process of learning. Upon first starting the app, you can select the Microeconomics or the Macroeconomics section. From then on, everything is organized in units with each unit having one or more concepts in it. These concepts are each incorporated on a flashcard, containing a graph and a short explanation of the concept.

Adding all these concepts together you presumably get the overall depth of knowledge that you have already studied in class. Most of the concepts should already be familiar to you when you see the flashcards, that’s why most of the abbreviations won’t even be explained [...]
