Dark Echo iPhone Game Review.
Imagine being all alone, in a dark room, with creepy noises surrounding you with every step you take. You need to get out. But how can you find the exit fast enough, before the creepy sounds catch on to you, and you are dead? Sounds pretty terrifying, right? Well, that’s exactly how playing Dark Echo feels like. App of the Week in the App Store. And one of the best, most engaging, and thrilling games I have ever played.
Dark Echo is absolutely brilliant. I have never imagined a creepy background tune and a couple of lines on the screen could ever be so scary. Because that’s all there is to it. Darko Echo proves that sometimes less is more with this exceptional game. You don’t see who is following you, or who is creeping in the shadow, waiting for you to make your next move. You don’t have to find hidden messages, and solve mind-boggling puzzles. You just have to walk to the exit point. Which can be pretty much anywhere. And you’re in complete darkness.
All you have to guide you in this game is the echo of the sound your footsteps make. Follow the white lines that are created with every step you take. Go through the yellow ones to unlock new passages. And keep away from the red lines. That’s where the danger is hiding. And it only takes one wrong step to fall into the trap, or let them hear you as you go by. Then, the chase begins. And you literally have to run for your life.
But although you’re in the dark, that doesn’t mean you’re completely clueless. You can use all sorts of intuitive controls to get a sense of your surroundings, walk faster when you need to, or tip toe to the escape point, when you have no other way to avoid danger. And it’s level based. Which makes the game even more thrilling, and addictive with each level you clear. The challenges get harder. And besides having to work on your strategy more and more, your memory will also be put to the test. You’re in the dark, but once you play a level for a couple of times, you should already have a mental picture of your surroundings, and which way should be smarter, and safer for you to follow.
I would have never thought that such a minimalistic game could be so brilliant. But Dark Echo proves that sometimes all you need is a couple of colored lines on the screen, an effective background sound, and some really smart, and catchy level names. Mix, and match this ingredients, and the result is fabulous. Puts your mind to the test. Your strategic thinking, as well. Your imagination fills the gaps in the darkness. And your adrenalin level is up to the roof just by looking at a dark screen, with a couple of lines on it, and a scary tune in the background. Now, that’s an experience I would pay for. But, luckily, this week you can live it totally free of charge. Fate that something totally new and unique in the App Store gaming world can still be created: totally restored.
