Icycle: On Thin Ice iPhone Game Review.

If you’re looking to start the year with a challenge, then Icycle: On Thin Ice is the game for you. Mind-bending, with an extremely beautiful design and plot, Icycle surprises with every step you take forward throughout the game. It’s magical, creative, complex, complicated, and totally free of charge to download this week. Because Icycle: On Thin Ice is App of the Week in the App Store.

Beautiful

Icycle is a beautiful game. I say that, with no doubt in mind. Your job is to guide naked Dennis through frozen mountains, ice-cold waters, and all the way to the end of the world in his quest to find love. And yes, he is naked, but, surprisingly enough, there’s nothing weird about it. Quite the contrary. It makes Dennis look even more noble, and his quest even more challenging, in this situation. Plus, it gives you an extra incentive to try to do your best to collect items along the way, and equip Dennis. To get him warmer, and give him more strength to complete his quest.

But extremely challenging

And being naked, in the cold, on a poor bicycle, going through all sorts of dangerous environments is the perfect description of the game. Because the game is so challenging that you’ll empathise with Dennis on all levels. The controls are really simple, and quite intuitive, so that’s not the problem. The problem is that, sometimes, you don’t really know which way to go. There are all sorts of obstacles that seem impossible to overcome. And you literally feel that you’re on thin ice.

Try to see the big picture

You only have a couple of controls and special items per level, so you’ll probably have the tendency to use them in all possible ways to complete the challenge. I know I did. But going faster, jumping higher, or changing the direction every time you don’t feel sure are not always the best tactics. You need to look at the big picture, and think. If the speed of the bicycle, or the hight of the jump didn’t help, then that’s probably not the way to go, and there’s a better, simpler, more logical way that you just can’t see yet.

Get your character equipped, clear the levels, and unlock achievements

That’s what makes the game a bit (more) nerve wrecking, and extremely challenging. Because just like the already famous Cut the Rope game, created by the same Chillingo that is also behind Icycle, every level is thought as a puzzle game that is guaranteed to put your mind at work. Completing the challenges is hard from being a piece of cake. Especially if you want to collect more ice, buy cool stuff, and get Dennis equipped faster. Or if you want to not only clear each level, but also clear it with the highest number of snowflakes earned, while completing more achievements, and getting faster to unlocking all the levels of the game. Of course, you can always pay with real money to get all this things done. But where’s the challenge in that?

Totally free of charge to download this week

Either way, no matter how much you want to achieve with this game, you’ll twist and turn to find the right way to do it. So, if you feel ready to start the year with a challenge, don’t think twice: Icycle is the best choice this week. And if you’re still in the holiday spirit, relaxing, and enjoying the cold outside, all covered up in a blanket, I think you should still take a couple of minutes to download it. Play it when you feel more up for the challenge. But don’t miss the chance to have such a beautifully designed, and well-thought game, totally free of charge.
