iTheme iPhone App Review.

What can be better than showing off to your friends with your cool unlock screen on your iPhone? And by cool I mean a wallpaper that's just stunning. While I do appreciate the simplicity of iTheme and the beauty of their designs, I have my doubts when it comes to the price tag of the app.

What is iTheme?

A simple questions deserves a simple answer. iTheme is a collection of 20 great themes that let you style the unlock and home screen of your iPhone or iPod Touch to suit your own personality. Just start up the app, choose one of the 20 themes and choose whether to save both the home screen and the unlock screen, or just one of the two. The app will save the images to your photo gallery and that's all the app will do for you.

If you don't own a device that supports home screen backgrounds (like the iPhone 3G or a lower generation iPod Touch), then you can only personalize the unlock screen.

In order to complete the process, you need to quit the app, go to the Photo library and set your new wallpaper as you normally would.

Personally, I would see different ways this could be handled. Perhaps I'm mistaken, I haven't read the Apple Developer guidelines too carefully, but I would hope that I can just view a background from the app itself and select whether to use it as the home screen or the unlock screen wallpaper (devs, correct me if I'm wrong: can apps interact with iOS in this way?).

The price of beauty

In my humble opinion, iTheme is a rather expensive way to style your iPhone's home screen and unlock screen. The app consists of 20 themes and it will cost you $1.99, which is like 10 cents per theme. That's not much if you think of it that way, but I would consider the enormous amount of free wallpapers out there just waiting for a download.

I'm a designer myself and I understand that great design comes with a price tag, and I would normally agree with charging for what is an otherwise great product. But I ultimately need to compare it with the sheer amount of free wallpapers available both in app-form in the AppStore or by doing simple web searches online and then saving that image to your Photo library (see here how).

Bottom line, iThemes is one great simple app. The designs for the themes are fantastic. And if you're not looking to spend time searching for something free (and by free I don't mean necessarily better) or design one yourself, than iTheme is well worth it. If you're like me, a graphic enthusiast and AppStore explorer, you might want to consider other options.
