Yahoo Messenger iPhone App Review.
One of the all time favorites messengers, Yahoo Messengers made it quickly to the top of most downloaded iPhone and iPod Touch apps in the Appstore. All the smileys and emoticons, chatting for hours with your friends, IM and SMS messages, update your status, add new contacts and share photos with our friends, Yahoo Messenger for the iPhone has all the features you enjoy on the web-based application on your desktop.
With YM for iPhone, you have all the features of the popular Yahoo Messenger, including the option to send an SMS straight from the iPhone, using your Yahoo Address book. You can set your status as invisible, busy or customize it just as you normally would. The archive feature is also supported as you can see past conversations even after logging out of the app. Sorting your contact list or showing and hiding your offlines are also an inherent feature of the iPhone app.
Once you launch the application and log in, the app will be running in the background as long as you're within range of a stable internet connection, and you will appear as "idle" to your friends and still be able to receive messages from them. If you receive a new IM the app makes a sound, or a buzz if the iPhone screen is locked but the app is running.
One thing we've enjoyed with this app is the support for receiving notifications even when the app is not running. We will see however how this will develop with the Yahoo Messenger iPhone application, as well as with the other IM apps, as the new SDK, rumor has it, will bring such support straight out of the box.
While visually appealing, yet simple, the app uses the iPhone's screen space wisely and effectively. The standard keyboard from the iPhone's OS is customized to optimize screen space. Incoming IMs are the priority, and they are separate from the input area where you're typing your text. And with the recent updates for utilizing the keyboard in landscape mode, making it much more easier and faster to type, Yahoo responds promptly to user feedback.
If you're already a Yahoo Messenger fan, then its iPhone and iPod Touch version is certainly a must-have, even more if you're always on the road and need to stay in touch with YM contacts. The app is free to download from the AppStore. Yahoo Messenger comes as the fourth iPhone-native application the company launched in the App Store, and we're looking forward to the launch of the new SDK and OS 3.0 for the iPhone for future developments from the team at Yahoo.
