Dress Jinjee iPhone App Review.
While the developers branded the app as a "Children’s App On The iPhone For The Festive Season," I found it to be much more than that. Sure enough the Christmasy backgrounds, the Gingerbread Man himself, the colors and the graphics - they all point to a child's idea of an app. But at Christmas time, we're all kids. We're all waiting for Santa, so why shouldn't we all enjoy a great app release - Dress Jinjee.
This iPhone app allows you to dress and decorate the Gingerbread Man and share him with your friends and family. At first sight, there's not much to this release, but the features that come with it including a wide selection of decorations for Jinjee (yes, that's his name now, although a bit tacky) , colorful backdrops and the awesome feature to record your own note and send it along with the card, make Dress Jinjee a great app to keep around the holiday times.
Add Your Own Decorative Touch To Jinjee
You of course don't need to bake the Gingerbread Man, it comes right from the pan straight to your iPhone. All you have to do is have fun decorating him for the Holiday. And decorate him you shall. There are tons of options to choose from, different combinations ranging from adding layers of coating, colored frosting, gum drop buttons, different facial expressions (expressed of course in candy). Add a smile or a frown, and even give him a fancy bow or a scarf around his neck. And like if that wasn't sweet enough, Jinjee can also carry a candy of your choosing with him, be it a peppermint stick, a candy heart or a lollipop. After that, select your favorite wallpaper to match your decorations.
Record Your Own Voice Or Choose One That Suits The Mood
It's now time for Jinjee to reach your friends and family, but don't send him off running without a wish. And nothing says "I love you" like your very own voice. Yes, that's right, you ca record your message right in the app and attach it to Jinjee.
If you're like me and you simply hate your voice on a recording, I'd go with one of the sound bites provided with the app. Although there aren't that many to choose from, you still have the regular greetings at your disposal.
Send Him Out To Your Loved Ones
Once you're happy with the result, you can save the postcard and even send it out via email (it will open up the native Mail application on your iPhone). The card will go out as a photo embedded in the email body, and to experience it fully (your sound bite included), there's a Quicktime movie attached to the email that the recipient will have to download to see.
What Can Be Improved
Alright, the Holiday season is over now. Christmas is out of the way, and perhaps our review and the app itself (it was launched in the AppStore on December 19th) come a bit late. That's not to say it's useless. Here's what I think can be improved for next time around.
Perhaps the most annoying thing was the way you cycle between decorations. There's no classic dropdown to display all the available graphics. Instead you're tapping one button to go through them all, with no way to go back, undo, or choose the decoration you saw two taps away.
One other thing I'd like to see with this one is the option to choose a wallpaper from your Camera Roll. I mean, why not? Instead of stock background, make Jinjee really personal. Your recipients will really appreciate a photo they can actually relate to.
Dress Jinjee is definitely missing the viral element. There's no share on twitter, share on facebook, at least the classic social networking environment we're all used to.
All in all though, I've definitely enjoyed the app and Dress Jinjee is well worth the $0.99 you'd have to pay for it in the AppStore. With some improvements, I think it will definitely replace my classic SMS message that I send out each and every Christmas. And for that, I say "Well done!"
