Turn your iPhone into a bedside clock

With Kensington's free NIghtStand iPhone and iPod Touch app, you can easily turn your favorite device into a nightstand clock with a retro or digital theme to enjoy on your occasional night walks. The application itself is free, and although there are several others that do the same job, the team over at Kensington added the novelty of including a stand to keep your iPhone fully charged at night.

The app is beautifully designed and loaded with neat options. You're given three themes to choose from and then personalize to your likings: reflection, flip and digital. The display works in both portrait and landscape mode, and you're free to choose whatever colors you desire for displaying the time. One extra added bonus is the local weather, which is displayed as well (in either Celsius or Fahrenheit degrees), plus the five-day forecast at the tap of a button.

You can enable or disable the flashing colon that separates the hours from the minutes, and you can also choose between a 12 and 24-hour format. NightStand also display the date on the screen, without obstructing view from the theme of the clock itself. But there's one critical element missing. As with all clocks you keep on your night stand, you'd expect some sort of an alarm to go off in the morning, and this is where Rise&Shine falls short. You can only use the native Clock app in the iPhone to set an alarm to run in the background, which not satisfying at all.

While the NightStand app is free itself, the Nightstand Dock however, not so much, and having the pleasure of seeing that clock every time you roll over will cost you $40. Perhaps too expensive for what is essentially just a regular iPhone charging plug with a small stand-like extension to hold the phone on its side in the desired position? You be the judge of that.
