Splojit - Matt Hardy

Splojit iPhone App Review.

Combining sounds and colors will literally drive you nuts in this memory-test iPhone game. Splojit has its roots in the popular web-based game Simon Sez but the ported game on the iPhone beats all odds and gives the user an indeed unique experience, incomparable to its forefather.

For those that don't know about Simon Sez, the basic idea is simple enough. As soon as you start the game, you're shown a sequence of colored spots flashing on the screen, each playing a differently pitched sound. Simply repeat the sequence to get to the next one. While Simon Sez only has four colors, with Splojit you have an entire board of 4 x 4 possibilities (think Wack A Mole). Also, with Splojit you have to watch out for the timer if you want to get a high score. So keep your reflexes close at hand and you're all set.

Unlike the traditional Simon Sez, Splojit will throw at you random sequences every time, with increasing difficulty, rather than repeating the same sequence every step, with just one tone added at the end. This does give the game a more difficult style of game play, but increases the game play time as well as provide Splojit with a great replay value.

Splojit's graphics are perfectly suited for the game play style, with clean and basic graphics that don't stand in the way of a fast paced, hectic and fun game. The use of colors is tasteful and pleasing to the eye, with the colorful splojis contrasting with the minimalistic background and overall app design. The game features no music since you have to hear the tones of the different paint blots that appear on the screen. Sure enough, you can turn these off in the options panel and play your own music with the iPod, but I think it would just decrease the fun.

The game incorporates a twitter client so you can easily tweet your scores to your twitter account. Also, you can submit your high score to see how you rank against your friends and other players worldwide. With 3 levels of difficulty to choose from, the sequence just gets longer and longer and the game faster and faster. Good reflexes and good memory will definitely certainly pay off with a high score.

The app is sold at the regular $0.99, with no lite version to give you hints as to what you'd be in for. The game is worth the dollar spent anyway, and perhaps no lite version would be needed if everyone knew what Simon Sez was all about.
