Crossword Solver - Agent X

Croosword Solver Agent X iPhone App Review.

Avid crossword puzzle addicts ahoy! Dictionary.com launched a new iPhone app that's meant to give you a helping hand in solving those crosswords that have your head spinning. Crossword Solver Agent X Word uses Dictionary.com's proprietary technology and semantic search to give you real-time answers and hits to your crossword. They claim to have reach over two million crossword hints and puzzles that are updated daily, but what's really catchy about it is that the iPhone app will collect clues that people are searching for everyday, therefore understanding trends and recognizing current events.

Put Agent X Word On The Case

I'm not sure exactly how it works, or rather why it works as it does. When you launch the app, you're greeted by Agent X Word, and you have to feed him clues and he'll give you answers. A clue is defined as the word you are looking for from the crossword you're solving. Type in the clue in the speech bubble and choose whether you want the answer or hints.

The app can give you up to three hints per answer. This is something that I really liked about Crossword Solver. The app is not designed to solve the puzzle for you, unless it's the final option. Think of it as a anti-cheat mechanism that you can take advantage of. If you're stuck on a word, input the clue into Agent X Word, and choose "Gimme a hint" from the options. If those three hints that he gives you aren't enough and you're still stuck, then go for the answer.

Both the hints and the answers come with a percentile display, meaning that Agent X Word will tell you how accurate that hint is for your clue. For the list of probable answers, the app will sort those of highest probability and display them in a descending order.

Synonyms And Definitions

As I said, I'd rather look at Crossword Solver as a crossword puzzle companion, and not an iPhone app that will solve the crossword for me. Aside from the actual enjoyment of solving a crossword, there's also new words to learn that will develop that little brain of mine. Crossword Solver comes to make sure you're not missing any of that either. Aside from answers and hints, the iPhone app will offer definitions and synonyms for the answers themselves. I believe that was a nice touch, because if the three hints weren't enough, and you couldn't recognize the answer either, then it would be nice to learn a new word by seeing what it actually means.

Creative Graphics

Crossword Solver comes packed with great graphics. The app itself looks like a game, with a secret agent as the hero. "PSSSST! You looking for answers?" This line really had me hooked, and kind of felt like the guy was really talking to me. Simple and great designs and a beautifully chosen color scheme, Crossword Solver makes your word-searching experience interesting and easy on the eye.

Other functions include a recent search history and the option to email answers to yourself or others.

With over 30,000 puzzles and more added daily and Dictionary.com's semantic search, you're sure to get the crossword right this time. The app goes for $2.99 in the AppStore, which may seem a bit harsh to some (me included). The app is good nevertheless, but wouldn't recommend it to anyone else but crossword puzzle addicts that are bound to use it on a daily basis. Also, if you're solving puzzles daily, you no longer have to wait for the next-day paper, and can get quote-unquote immediate gratification from solving the crossword puzzle in today's newspaper without waiting for the answer tomorrow or calling an expensive answer service.
