A Touch Puzzle – Great Graphics, Same Old Game Play

I’ve always said puzzle games are a big genre on the App Store. But the issue is that with a growing number of such games, there’s little to no innovation. A lot of the puzzle games seem to follow a precedent and aim to further develop a puzzle concept through spicier graphics, perhaps an extra layer of difficulty. It’s been a while since I’ve played a puzzle game that redefined puzzle games or introduced a new and exciting concept for the genre in the App Store.

Unfortunately, Touch Puzzle is not that game either. The concept of the game is similar to other games. You’re presented with a board filled with different icons and you need to connect three or more identical icons to remove them from the board. When you do, more icons appear from the top.

The way you connect three icons is by drawing lines with your finger on the screen. Each line needs to [...]

Become The Intersection Overlord With City Traffic HD

Are you looking for a simple fast-paced game with minimal control-usage? Are you into cars but don’t like racing games? Then City Traffic might be a good pick for you. In City Traffic, available both for the iPhone and the iPad, your task is to make sure that all the vehicles in the busy intersections in four different cities around the world cross the intersections safely.

Yes, if this game seems pretty similar to Traffic Rush, it’s because it is. The same basic rules apply here as well. Tap and swipe to control the vehicles in traffic. Make sure the intersection is clear so that vehicles can move about their way. Avoid all crashes at all costs.

You have two options when directing traffic. You can either stop the car completely, by tapping on it, or you can speed it up, by swiping it in the direction desired. Any vehicle that’s stopped won’t stay stopped [...]

PowerDown Is A True Nerve Wrecker

Are you up for a challenge? Wait, don’t answer just yet! PowerDown is not your everyday puzzle. It will wear you down, while pushing your mental abilities to their limits.

PowerDown is inspired by the famous Lights Out puzzle game. I’ve personally never played Lights Out before, so I have no basis for comparison, perhaps it’s for the best. I’m usually disappointed by remakes.

The idea of the game is to turn of all the lights in each level. The lights are represented as white, glowing cells on a 5×5 grid. When you start a level, a number of lights are turned on already.

The rule of thumb is that tapping on any one light (that’s on or off) will toggle that cell and its four immediate neighboring cells. So tapping one cell can either turn off lights or turn on lights, or both, and in here lies the challenge.

In order to win a level, you need to shut [...]

hazard-iphone-game-review

Hazard might just be the simplest game in the App Store, but that doesn’t make it any less addictive. The goal in Hazard is to keep Harry, the construction worker, safe. The ceiling is about to collapse and you must get him to safety before it squashes him.

The way to keep him safe is to find the gap that could fit him and put him there before the ceiling collapses. Both the ceiling and the floor have gaps of various sizes. You must think quick to get him to the one big enough to fit Harry inside and live to see another level.

You only have three controls available to you. Left, right and jump. Harry will do the rest. Like squashing and bending to fit in the hole you put him in. It’s absolutely amazing how flexible this guy is, so don’t be fooled by the potentially small size of the hole. Generally, if the ceiling and the floor don’t touch [...]

Transbomber Takes A Swing At AngryBirds

Before you take a look at the screenshots, this is not AngryBirds with robots. While there are visible similarities between these two games (more on this a bit later on), Transbomber stands as a game apart.

The goal in Transbomber is to eliminate the enemy robots down below by dropping bombs on them from a fly-by. Tapping on the screen will launch the next plane above the robots and tapping again will drop the bomb.

It’s interesting to note that bombs need to hit the robot precisely in order for it to go down. Other boxes or the robot falling off a cliff won’t kill it. There are four different planes each with its own distinctive bombs that you must use carefully. You’ll need logic, skill and sometimes a bit of luck to crush the enemy.

If you were ever a Worms player, then you might remember one very, very important element to take [...]

Just Another Bricks Game

newpark-blockers-hd-iphone-game-review

I’m sorry to say that cool space backgrounds and nifty HD graphics won’t make any game great. The great design will most definitely create an experience that much better for the user. The stunning backgrounds will polish up an otherwise great innovative idea. But what if you take away all these and all you have left is the idea. And that idea is nothing new? Then you’re stuck with NewPark Blockers HD.

If you did get stuck with it, there’s only one thing to do. Play it! The game is an awesome brick game, just another bricks game, yes, but a great one at that. I could’t believe (or accept for that matter) that you’re not familiar with what a bricks game is. The basic idea is you have a pad at the bottom of the screen and a ball bouncing around the place. Don’t let the ball fall behind your pad and smash all the bricks you [...]
