We ran across a fun and challenging game in the AppStore the other day that we simply couldn’t put down. So after playing the first 23 or so levels, having drank enough coffee and ignoring everything and everyone else around us, we’ve put our iPhones and iPods aside and moved on to writing its review.

With Air Traffic Controller you are out in charge of directing incoming and outgoing flights from the flight control center, attempting to clear the air space avoiding any air-accidents and flight casualties. Your job appears simple at the beginning for the first few levels, but be assured calamities will ensue if you take it lightly. The controls are simple enough. Tap on a plane to select it and then simply swipe across the screen from the plane location to the destination to get it moving in that direction. You have 4 destination checkpoints, at the sides of your screen, plus the airport where you can land planes on their designated runways. Planes will be coming in from all four checkpoints and will also be taking off from the runways on the airport, so pay close attention to where you direct outgoing planes as to not crash them into the incoming ones.

Accuweather replaces the native iPhone app

The World’s Weather Authority, Accuweather, launched their own native app for the iPhone probably never thinking it will have the potential to replace the iPhone’s own. With accurate weather forecasts, 15-day local forecasts, weather alerts, videos and alarms, and complete with hourly forecasts, Accuweather has all you need to plan that family picnic, choose what to wear and even decide when it would be a good time to take the dog out for a walk.

Once you pop in the app, the works are similar to the native iPhone Weather App. You type in your location or zip code, and the app adds your location. After that you can enjoy a wealth of information, rain or shine. The app will show you on the home screen the current weather conditions at your selected location, complete with temperature, humidity, air pressure, and winds. The menu at the bottom of the screen will let you choose between Current, Hourly, 15-day, and a set of Indices. Their recent update for the app increased both the hourly and the daily forecast, from 5 to 15 hours and 15 days respectively, giving you more than enough of a head start for anything you might have planned during the day or the week. You also get a “Real Feel” indicator of the temperature outside, to give you the temperature in what it actually feels like out there, not what the thermometers on the wall will tell you.

Almost one year after its launch on July 10, Facebook’s own iPhone and iPod Touch application still ranks pretty high in the App Store’s Top Apps. Following their release of their iPhone-customized webapp, which quickly became a bookmark on users’ home screen, a very usable site, filled with all the rich functions and important functionality features, the acclaimed social networking site launched a its own native app to provide users with a mobile directory with rich information about your friends.

Facebook for the iPhone offers some important features that were missing in their webapp, while disregarding some of the crucial things that came with OS 3.0. You of course have all your friends and their info and profiles at the tap of a button. You of course have the possibility to take pictures and upload them straight on Facebook. We’re also looking at a whole bunch of features like notifications, news feeds, a people search function, the almighty wall, access to your Facebook Inbox and respond to friend requests. One crucial development was the built-in chat feature, so you can send instant messages to online Facebook friends.

With Top 10 Barcelona for your iPhone or iPod Touch, you’ll never run out of fun activities and spectacular places to visit. Whatever your plans and budget are, this app will make sure you get the most out of your experience in Barca. Top 10 Barcelona is one of the 10 new Travel Apps the development team at CoolGorilla launched for Dorling Kindersley, the world’s best-selling travel publisher.

What makes this iPhone app special as related to its market is, of course, the top quality content, which is not grabbed anonymously from public sites or stuff you would also find on Google Maps. Since we’re talking about one of the world’s most respected travel guide publishers, the iPhone app needed to be top notch, and we believe it serves its purpose rising up to the challenge. All its content is offline, downloaded with the app. We’re talking about a bigger file size (18.6MB), but, the development team over at CoolGorilla definitely took under consideration practicability before anything else, since you would have to assume high charges for the roaming service, and a wireless connection is not what you’d want to be looking for in Barcelona. The only connection to the internet the app requires is for an up-to-date currency converter.

Reminisce about paper-game classics with Dots

This iPhone game from the developers at Optime Software is bound to bring back childhood memories of grammar school, when we were wasting time and paper on one of the best games we’ve ever played back in the times. With Dots, forget about wasting paper, and download for free this sweet classic and play against the computer while reminiscing about the good old days when time flew by and fun was guaranteed.

For those of you who don’t know the game and haven’t played it before, the learning curve is really low. You basically have to connect dots by placing a line between any two dots, while alternating turns with your opponent. The goal is connect four lines as to create a closed circuit between them, aka a box. You win by completing more boxes than your opponent.

Tricky questions for iPhone users

how-smart-are-you-iphone-app-review

Looking beyond its typical IQ Test app icon and categorization, “How Smart Are You?” provides us with a different insight into our discerning and attention span capabilities. Its questions are not your typical “complete the series of numbers” you’d be likely to find in any other brain tester out there. In fact, among the other web-based IQ tests we’ve seen over the years, we didn’t see any of the questions found in this iPhone app.

We’ve seen a similar test circulating over the internet, called The Official Moron Test, which was said to have questions based upon typical graduation requirements at Harvard University. You’ll find some of the questions from there incorporated into this iPhone app, along with many others. Both are pretty interesting, with the web-based one having the upper hand for more questions, and displaying the right and wrong answers at the end of the test, along with explanations.
